Rohit Shetty – the real box office ‘Singham’
Rohit Shetty – who worked as an AD (assistant director) on Ajay Devgn’s debut film Phool Aur Kaante, entered Bollywood as a film director in 2003 with the Devgn-Abhishek Bachchan action-thriller Zameen. While the film turned out to be an average grosser, Shetty rose to fame with his 2006 comedy, Golmaal – which has now become one of the most loved film franchises in India. As of 2024, the franchise consists of four films – Golmaal (2006), Golmaal Returns (2008), Golmaal 3 (2010) and Golmaal Again (2017). Shetty’s 2022 period comedy-drama Cirkus – starring Ranveer Singh and Varun Sharma in dual roles, is also linked to this franchise.
Aside from the Golmaal franchise, Rohit became a name synonym with action, flying cars and cops with the release of his 2011 actioner Singham. Featuring Ajay Devgn as the titular character, this film gave rise to the Cop Universe. Shetty’s Copverse comprises 5 films – Singham, Singham Returns, Simmba, Sooryavanshi and Singham Again, and 1 web series – Indian Police Force.
Having directed 16 films till now (Singham Again is his 16th film), Rohit Shetty has delivered several blockbuster hits. For the unversed, nearly half of Shetty’s directorials are part of the prestigious Rs 100 crore club (India Nett collection) and this makes him the REAL SINGHAM at the box office.
